If you still haven’t played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019, you should definitely do that! And the sooner the better. From the gameplay point of view, the campaign is just marvelous – in this respect, Modern Warfare holds the level of the best parts of the franchise. Sniper duels with consideration of distance and wind, defense of the American ambassadors, deactivating a bomb on a kamikaze’s chest – there are plenty of non-standard situations that add dynamics and suspense to the story. The developers showed great care for details, for instance, animations. When you play for a young, inexperienced commander of the rebels Farra, you can notice that she even holds the gun differently, recharges it unskillfully and doesn’t control the recoil. Nuances like these allow the players to fully immense into the atmosphere of the events.
The story is divided into two parallel lines: a conflict with terrorists who stole a chemical weapon and the chaos caused by Russian soldiers in a fictional country that allegedly takes us back to Syria. Sometimes it’s too far-stretched, the scenarist seems to have written a classic action movie about Close East extremists and for some reason added Russians as an unquestionable evil. This is definitely a cliche, but if you love CoD, you can just close your eyes to it and enjoy the gameplay.
What the authors did great is the new reincarnation of captain Price. He impersonates all the postulates the studio announced as key to the plot. Cold reason, charisma, huge military experience and the famous ‘grey moral’ of the armed conflicts make him a bright personality. During the game, you’ll see him sacrifice a hostage because there is no time to deactivate the bomb, take a captive’s family to questioning and start threatening them with Russian roulette and so on. Missions with tactical cleaning of the buildings under the guidance of captain Price are some of the most thrilling in the game. You need to act with surgical precision, be ready to make your move any second and observe your targets closely, among which there are also civilians.
